  6. ***What is this?***
  7. I've recently managed to convert the type 3 Computer Modern postscript
  8. fonts cmrps into type 1 fonts compatible with ATM. (I've done this on a
  9. Macintosh, but the results should be portable.) The conversion so far is
  10. less than perfect:
  11.     1) I've only done the set used by plain LaTeX. In addition,
  12.        I've only done the 10 point sizes. 
  13.     2) The extensions font doesn't work correctly for reasons I
  14.        don't understand.
  15.     3) ATM doesn't seem to want to render the text italic font at
  16.        sizes >50 points. This seems like a bug that I won't be
  17.        able to fix. (It is not a problem with the cache setting
  18.        in ATM.)
  19.     4) The TeX encoding is different than the Mac encoding. If you
  20.        use the fonts in a mac application and print you get special
  21.        characters where the spaces should be. My (hack) solution
  22.        is to create two different versions of the fonts: One to
  23.        use with Mac applications (with the space characters
  24.        changed) and one to use with TeX. I've actually
  25.        significantly rearranged the Mac version of the math italic
  26.        font so that the greek characters are easily accessible
  27.        with the option key.

  29. What has this given me? I can now use OzTeX to preview at any size.
  30. This takes up less disk space than the pk fonts do. (Each postscript
  31. font takes up about 25k.) I can easily use the Computer Modern fonts
  32. with other Mac applications. I find that typewriter font is the best
  33. monospaced font available. You can probably find more...
